Masaan is a 2015 Indian Hindi-language independent drama film directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and starring Richa Chadda and Vicky Kaushal in lead roles. It is Kaushal's debut Hindi film, and is also the directorial debut of Ghaywan. The film was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival winning two awards. The film follows two seemingly separate story arcs that eventually converge. The first of these tells the story of Devi (Richa Chadda), a trainer at a coaching computer center and her student, Piyush Aggarwal, who are caught having sex in a hotel room by policemen who had been tipped off by the hotel staff. Inspector Mishra records the barely clad Devi on his mobile phone. Piyush locks himself in the bathroom and commits suicide by slitting his wrists. Inspector Mishra threatens to book Devi for abetting Piyush's suicide and demands a bribe of 300,000 (equivalent to 450,000 or US$5,600 in 2023) from Devi's father Vidyadhar Pathak, a Sanskrit professor who now runs a book shop with an income of about Rs 10000 per month.

The second narrative concerns Deepak (Vicky Kaushal), a young boy from the untouchable Dom caste who works in the cremation ghats. He is a civil engineering student at a polytechnic college. Deepak falls in love with Shaalu Gupta (Shweta Tripathi), a high caste Hindu girl, and their difference in caste leads to familial and societal conflicts. Deepak and Shaalu spend a lot of time getting to know one another. At the back of their minds, they fear that society will divide them basis caste. However they plan marriage. But just before this can happen Shaalu goes on a pilgrimage with her entire family. And one day when Deepak is burning bodies on the ghats, he hears of an accident where a bus has fallen into the Ganga claiming all the lives of the passengers within. To Deepak's utmost horror, he sees a body of a girl who he recognises by the ring on her finger. And his worst fears are confirmed when he sees the face.

It also portrays the harsh realities of corruption, police brutality, and social discrimination that plague the country.
